Nuts are also encouraged because some nuts contain omega-3 fatty acids which are good for the body. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to lower triglycerides, decrease blood clotting, and are associated with decreased incidence of sudden heart attacks. They also improve the health of the blood vessels and help moderate blood pressure. Nuts are also good sources of fiber, protein and healthy fats, hence why the Mediterranean diet encourages keeping almonds, cashews, pistachios and walnuts on hand for a quick snack. Please note that since nuts are high in calories, the Mediterranean Diet discourages eating them in large amounts.
